Dog Breeders Toronto Q&A
Does anybody know any breeders of any small to medium sized dogs in Toronto?
Looking specifically for a Jack Russell, Bichon Frise, Maltese Terrier, or a Beagle. They have to be in Toronto, North York, or Etobicoke.
Those dogs are all very different from one another. The bichon and the Maltese are lap dogs, the beagle is a scenthound, and the Jack Russell, or Parson Russell, terrier is tenacious little creature bred to kill vermin.
You really need to think about which breed is suitable for your lifestyle. Are you active? A couch potato? First-time dog owner? Dog owner veteran? Know little about canine behavior or quite a bit? What other pets do you have in the house and what about your other family members - what preferences do they have for a dog? And what about your own personality? Are you a Type A person, very driven, demanding, outgoing? Or are you shy and retiring, and not forceful at all?
These are all far more important than which doggy is the cutest. : ) I suggest you research the breeds, and beyond that, find a few breeders of each breed and visit their kennels. Get to know the dogs and see how they behave, and what their instincts will drive them to do. Also, the best breeders know their dogs and their breed's history like the back of their hand, and can fully guide you in your choice.
Here are the national breed clubs - start there and find breeders in your area:

You may also want to consider saving a life and rescuing a purebred. Often these dogs are dumped for ridiculous reasons, such as babies being born, moving, no time, can't train it, etc. Most often it is the OWNER'S fault and lack of dedication, so don't think that shelter dogs are 'used goods.'
I hope this is helpful to you, and good luck! : )
