Crate training popularity?

I'm from the UK, have raised many dogs from puppyhood, and come from a long-time breeding and showing family.
I'd say that about 75% of the UK dog-owning population and perhaps over 90% of non dog-owners, would not know what 'crate training' meant. I've never met a British dog owner who crate trained their dogs.

However, from contact with American breeders, from opinions here and from the AKC information and help pages, I get the impression that crating is by far the most common method of housebreaking and training used in the US.
Some people who show dogs here will use a crate - but only to condition their dogs for travelling, it won't be part of the general fabric of training or socialisation. As far as I've seen, crating isn't common in contintental Europe either.

Just out of interest, does anyone have any idea why crate-training is so popular and routine in the US, but not over here?

I think part of it has to do with the mentality towards dogs in Europe. I travel to Europe at least once a month (If not more) and dogs are allowed everywhere - Stores, malls, heck you can't visit a restaurant in Italy or Germany without seeing a dog. In the US, you can bring them to Pet Stores and that's it.

I see a lot of questions here from people in the UK about using a Kennel (Not called Crates there), so perhaps it's just now becoming popular.
