we are considering buying a dalmation pup, first time dog owners, but hearing mixed reports? need help?
have heard that they are kind, friendly and very loyal, but also hear they are aggressive, not good family pets etc. we have a reasonable back yard, but lots of space to walk within our estate. please help, Living in Victoria Australia, are there any breeders that can be recommended to ensure well behaved, dogs

In summary, Dalmatians are extremely energetic, loving, clever dogs who can be quite headstrong and territorial (so they are naturally suspicious of strangers, and thus require extensive socialization in order to be accepting of guests). They become hyperactive, high-strung and destructive without proper exercise and training. They shed, and they're prone to a lot of health problems (which can be largely prevented through quality breeding and proper raising). They require owners who are very active and who can be calm, consistent, patient, firm and benevolent, as they can be challenging and try to outsmart their owners.
So, yes, a well-bred, well-socialized, well-trained, well-exercised Dal is a kind, friendly and very loyal dog. On the other hand, a poorly-bred, poorly-socialized, poor-trained, and/or poorly-exercised Dal can be aggressive and unsuitable for a family setting. (However, even friendly, "good" Dalmatians are not recommended for homes with small children, since they can be on the boisterous side.)
