What can I do to start planning for a puppy?
Okay, so I might be getting a puppy for christmas. The reason I say might is because my dog just got put to sleep on August 12, and we are still dealing with the loss of him. I have talked to my mom about getting a puppy, and she promised me that we would get one, but she never talked about a time so i was thinking about asking her to get one around christmas time, or maybe next summer. I want to start planning things out, but I have no clue where to start. Researching breeds? Finding breeders? I would get the dog from a breeder, and that is my own personal choice. I have not had good experiences with dogs from shelters. Like I said I know that this is quite a long time away but I want to be prepared so that when I talk to my parents about it, they will know the details! (:
I live in wisconsin if that helps any, but I dont think it really matters. Also, im 14.
Great idea! Get your puppy at the start of Christmas break as an early present. That way you will have time to help with the potty training. Get a dog that fits the size of your house and how much time you can exercise it. Some dogs need more exercise than others. Also look into "crate training" your puppy. It worked well for our lab puppy. He is almost 8 yrs. old and hangs out in his "cratey" as a safe place or like a den. Get a book to show how to do it effectively from the library or buy one at a pet store. If you have a Petsmart they have behavior training classes (6-8 lessons and costs about $110) and most of their people are knowledgeable about dogs. Check your local newspapers for puppies or young dogs for free or at a low price. Good Luck.
