Dog breed advice?

I'm looking for a breed of dog that is well suited to my life and that has needs i can fulfill.
The dog would not spend a massive amount of time alone but if the shifts conspire against us it could end up spending six hours alone up to three days a week : (..... so im after a dog that is happy alone in a run with a load of toys.
I can give it just over an hour of exercise a day.
The breed needs to be happy with a reasonably novice owner and not overly aggressive.
Also, i need a dog that does not provoke allergies too badly.

Well, firstly, NOT a border collie - you will hear that they need an extraordinary amount of exercise, but that's not strictly true. What they do need is a fair amount of exercise but mainly they need mental stimulation and/or feeling as if they've got a job to do. This job can be anything from chewing a long-lasting chewy stick, to playing (my BC's favourite ever game is hide and seek). They can be wonderful pets as they are so keen to please and to learn but I don't think it's the dog for you. Ditto any of the terriers really as they also need as much exercise and mental stimulation.

I'd say something like a lab or lab retriever would be best for you; something of a more docile and dare I say it lazy nature! A long haired retriever may not be the best for allergies but a short haired lab may be better.

I'd feel happier if the dog was in your home rather than left in a run if it's going to be a house dog but that's my personal preference. Wherever it is, rotate the toys, as staring at the same lot of toys every day will mean it gets bored of them too quickly.

If you can't spend a lot of time with it straight away then that pretty rules out a young pup - which is no different to a baby really so a little (8-12 wks plus) pup would need walking and feeding three times a day at first.

If I were you, I would do three things: (a) buy a book on dog ownership, (b) spend a lot of time on the Kennel Club website (it has loads of information on breeds) and/or go to the Discover Dogs show at Earls Court, and (c) go to your local rehoming centre, have a chat with them.

And a final point wrt Border Collies, many rehoming centres will not let you take a Border Collie unless you have had previous experience of them - for good reason!

Me and my partner would love to get a small dog and need some advice. We currently live in an apartment of good size, with a long balcony, but going for a walk every evening for the dog to get exercise I'm home most of the time, since I work from home, but sometimes I'm forced out perhaps until four hours, so I'd like a breed that is comfortable stay on their own for short periods.
