Where Can You Find High Quality Pictures Of Dog Breeds?
My Friend Andrea Is Getting A Dog And She Doesn't Know What Kinds Their Are Or What kind To Get So I'm Trying To Help Her Out A Little
You can really help out your friend by getting her to think about what kind of dog she is realistically looking for before she decides on a breed or a dog based upon looks.
- what size dog - tiny, small, medium, large or giant?
- how much energy, how much exercised is required - low, medium, high, very high
- what kind of coat, how much bathing/grooming is required - low, medium, high?
- personality: calm, excitable, quiet, aloof, friendly, etc.
- environment: small apartment, house, lots of other pets, children, seniors, etc.
- purpose: quiet companion, running partner, play buddy, etc.
Once she has a realistic idea of what kind of dog she wants to have for the next 15 years, she can figure out what breed fits her the best. Then she can figure out if she wants a purebred or a mixed breed with some of those purebred characteristics she has decided upon.
Having worked out in her head what she is looking for will make it less likely that she gets a dog because she happens to see a cute one. Lots of people end up with dogs like dalmatians and jack russells that way (too many advertisements and movies with them) and end up with a dog that does not fit their lifestyle.
Once she has narrowed down her list, she can research the net and read about the pros and cons of each type of dog. There are always cons and sometimes you have to dig into forums to get real stories from actual owners.
There are nearly 500 breeds of dogs in the world with the AKC representing about 1/3rd of that number. Most breeds are pretty unpopular or rare with most people picking from a handful of those available.
