European Kennel Club Q&A
is the American Bully breed legal in the uk?
i have been reading about them and they say they are nothing like the pitbull, and its recognised by the European Kennel Club which also covers england, so im confused
I thihnk you are confusing the "American Bully" (which is a "type" of pit mix) with the American Bulldog, which is a legitimate breed and very different from the American Bully.
American Bullys would be most definitely not legal in the UK. They are a "pit type" dog, having a large % pit bull terrier in the mix.
American Bulldogs theoretically are legal. BUT, if someone enforcing the laws decides the dog even *looks* like a "pit bull type", they would be subject to the ban. The UK's breed ban is very general in nature, covering a few specific breeds and further expanded to cover any dog that appears to be a "pit bull type" dog. Even if you have registration papers indicating the dog's actual breed, they can still decide they are subject to the ban. Considering the breed knowledge of the average human, and how often I see American Bulldogs called "pit bulls" by members of the general public, I'm not sure I'd place a dog in danger by keeping anything that looked even a little bit like a "pit bull type" in the UK. The government page regarding the law is here: http://www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/dangerous/
