Can I cancel an airplane flight I've already paid for?
I have a flight scheduled for this Friday with American Airlines, but I wasn't able to save enough to book a hotel so I really can't go. Is there a way to get a refund or partial refund or anything? I had purchased it directly from their website a couple of weeks ago.
If you bought a nonrefundable fare (the kind most people get because it's the cheapest kind), then you cannot get a refund. The best you could probably do is cancel and it and get a voucher to use sometime in the next year. The voucher is not redeemable for cash, only another flight. In addition, they will take a good chunk out of it for cancellation fees.

Here is a link to American Airlines' Contract of Carriage--it is the contract formed between you and AA when you buy a ticket. Scroll down to "Refunds" for information on getting a refund. In their COC, they do not differentiate between refundable and non-refundable fares. I have never flown with them, so I suggest contacting the airline directly and see what they can do.
