Also let her read these stories.
A heartbeat can be felt as I hold this soft, fuzzy, living creature in my arms. I walk slowly down the dark hall; a pitiful attempt to delay what I know is coming. The door at the end seems to be taunting me as I draw closer and closer to it. Barks and whines can be heard by other employees, but not by me. I feel as though I’m in my own world wishing this wasn’t my fate. The door creates a small suction as I turn the handle and push forward. Still, I can feel the heartbeat of this animal I cradle in my arms. Another person is already in this room waiting for me and the trusting, loyal critter. My heart skips a beat as I place the animal on the steel, cold, almost evil, table. This animal has a name: Precious we call her. She’s only a young pup dropped off by an uncaring owner whose dog had wound up pregnant with her and her siblings. The other person in the room hastily grabs a needle and a small bottle of liquid. I bite my lip in a desperate effort to hold back the tears threatening to give way. I then look into the eyes of this small animal that did absolutely nothing to deserve this horrendous fate. Her only crime was being born and then ending up here. The eyes tell all I once heard someone say. Whoever said this spoke the truth. I could see the touch of fear in her eyes. Beyond the fear I could still find that trust she had towards me. In her mind, she was safe. Trust is the thing that most dogs can truly show in their eyes. As my thoughts returned to the other person in the room who had now turned toward me and Precious, I took a very deep breath. This is it, I thought. Holding Precious close to me to ease her apprehension, the unforgiving needle pierced her beautiful skin. I watched in horror as the liquid disappeared. My mind raced as it always did during this time of the euthanasia. A heartbeat is something we often take for granted. The needle was removed and a moment passed. Soon the heartbeat was gone and the body of an innocent creature was now lying limp in my hands. I walked to the box for such bodies and gently laid her to rest. A sigh escaped my lips and a tear dropped to the bitter concrete floor. All in a day’s work, I sadly thought to myself. What you’ve just heard is what so often happens behind the scenes in kill animal shelters. Workers there are plagued with the duty of senselessly killing unwanted animals. After 5 or so days, the animal is killed for the simple fact that the shelter doesn’t have room for them and no one else wants them.
Success stories:
Honestly, adopting my dog, Bailey, was the best thing I ever did!! Each morning he greets me when I come downstairs, wagging his tail so that his entire body shakes and it totally makes my day!! We adopted him from a rescue group at a local Petsmart and that was probably the best day of my life. Currently, he has his little head resting on the pillow next to me snorin away!!
Our Beagle Buddy was from a backyard breeder originally. When the woman couldn't sell the pups, she started giving them away. The unlucky family that got Buddy had other dogs. They crate trained buddy, but within a month and a half Buddy was surrendered to a shelter in Eastern Oregon. The paperwork said that Buddy was teaching their other dogs bad habits and couldn't be left alone during the day. (This is not unusual for Beagles, they hate to be left alone) He was adopted out again and shortly, returned again, this time with no surrender paperwork. After a few weeks Buddy was brought from Eastern Oregon to Corvallis because this gave him a better chance of being adopted out. This was a correct assumption. When I saw Buddy in the cage, there was an immediate connection. Although he wouldn't come to the front of the cage, I felt as if I had known him a long time. When we asked to see him, the assistant told us he was a little timid. As soon as Buddy walked through the door of the meet and greet room he curled up in my lap and licked my face for all he was worth. He then went on to endear himself to both children and my husband. He is a gentle sweet soul who is only intimidated by other very large active dogs. He spent two weeks recovering from his long traumatic experience sleeping non stop but is now acting like the fantastic dog he is. He's smart as a whip, knows how to find anything we hide for him, loves leg bone sections from the meat department, slides on his belly to be "sneaky" when trying to come near the table when we eat, he loves long walks, playing "chase" with the kids, curling up in our laps, giving kisses, sleeping the day away in my husbands office and bacon is definitely his favorite treat of all time. He learned our version of "beg" (sitting and lifting one paw) in two minutes and now does it constantly. He doesn't use his voice very much, but every night he jumps onto each childs bed and kisses them before coming into our room and disappearing under our covers at our feet to sleep. We love Buddy!
Tell her that you'll be saving a life. One dog bought from a breeder is one dog killed at a shelter.
Borrow the book "Love That Dog" by Sharon Creech from the library and read it together. It only took me about 30-60 minutes to read. It's pretty short.
