Herding Dogs,German Shepards are one breed of Herd dog,says the encyclopedia.?

But I've never seen them, "work" as herd dogs.Can they be trained to herd sheep and cattle? I know they have good energy and stamnia,and they are rather gentle,despite the reputation for being guard and police dogs,so maybe they wouldn't attack sheepand I was trying to fins what their particular breed's purpose was.I know retrievers,retrieve birds for hunters,after the birds are shot.Chesapeake Bay retrievers can retrieve and swim in ice water due to think oily fur,and strong build,bred in them to hunt on that river.Beagles are bred to be rabbit hunting dogs,and foxhounds hunt foxes.So since German Shepards are herd dogs,exactly what do they herd and are any employed in herding currently that you know of?

Yes, a long time ago, in another galaxy far far away...I'm kidding. Yes they were once herders but they excelled at so many other things that they arent really used for the discipline any more. I'm sure that there are people out there who have been able to train them to do their tradtional jobs. But the breed is MUCH "hotter" temperment wise than it had originally. Its a much better guard dog, search and rescue, guide dog, etc...
I must disagree about the "gentle" part though, there are exceptions of course, but as a rule, the breed is "sharp" natured, with a high prey drive and slightly high strung. That's why guide dog organizations found it necessary to establish their own bloodline and "type" of GSD to be reasonably sure of a sound and sane animal to do that job. I you go online, you should be able to find breed archival photos from when Von Stephanitz first sat down to solidify the breed type. It was a much smaller dog with more white markings, which he quickly worked to eradicate, with several different breeds used to concoct it. He had an ideal in mind and soon came up with a reasonably recognizable dog to compare to today's specimens.
I hope that helped. If you want to see breeds that RESEMBLE GSDs that still are used to herd, look at the Belgian Sheepdog and Belgian Tervurens, they are both used in their native country in compeitition today. But the Border Collie, Kelpie and a couple of other breeds, long ago, eclipsed them as the favored choice. They're just faster and smarter at it.
