Are there any German shepherd or yellow lab dog breeders out there who can help me?
I have a 10 month old male German Shepherd-Yellow Lab mix puppy who is simply put: awesome. His name is Chevy and since day one he has changed my life so much that I wonder all the time what I used to do with my free time before my wife surprised me and got him for me. I have a good friend who had a shepherd so I kind of had an idea on what to expect when I first got him. To make a long story short; he is such a great dog that I would love to see if I can breed him with another shepherd or lab so that he can have a buddy to play with. I know that I can find other shepherd-lab mix puppies but I really want to have one of Chevy's puppies if possible. Can anyone help me?
I can definitely understand the sentiment of wanting to get another dog just like yours but unfortunately it doesn't work that way.
A puppies personality is a small part genetics but much more importantly a function of their raising from birth to 8 weeks, then what you've done with him since you've gotten him. In short, Chevy is an awesome dog because you raised him that way.
Just an estimate from my personal experience with both breeds but primarily labs, the personality is only about 10% controlled by genetics. The rest is by how the dog was raised. More importantly, the portion that is in fact controlled by genetics isn't likely why you love him so much, it's the instincts like prey drive and retrieving drive. Those aspects are not unique to your dog, the way you raised him is.
Furthermore, of that 10% that is controlled by genes, your dog will contribute around half. That means any puppies Chevy produces will only be influenced by him by about 5%. That's an awfully small percentage to justify bringing a bunch more puppies into the world when you only want one. You've also got a significant chance of ending up with a puppy that's a decidedly smaller percentage like him.
Even still, that specific 5% is not unique to Chevy. There are a lot of really great shepherds and labs out there. I know, I've had a couple. There's also a lot of really great mixes out there. What's sad is there a lot of really great of all three that are sitting in shelters awaiting euthanasia since there are no homes for them.
Even finding a quality dog to breed with will be problematic if not impossible since a responsible lab or GSD breeder will be unwilling to breed their dogs with him. It's more likely that you'll end up with a significantly worse puppy, both behaviorally and health wise, than Chevy.
It's not that he's not a great dog but they know that it doesn't result in what you're hoping it will. I've had and known quite a few dogs, their parents, and even their grandparents. There's no consistency in personality unless they are raised by the same people under the same conditions and when that happens, the unrelated dogs are just as similar.
When you're ready for a new pup, go find a lab, GSD, or mix that needs to be rescued and raise it just like you did Chevy and you'll end up with another great dog and save one instead of adding to the overpopulation. Besides, if every dog you had were exactly the same, what's the fun in that?
