German Shepherd Dog Breeders Germany Q&A
SG3 rates in Germany and Hip Dysplasia in German Shepherds?
Hi. I'm considering a German Shepherd puppy from this breeder here. The ad says that the father of the puppies is SG3 rated in Germany. When I asked the guy on the phone (before seeing the puppy) about the Hip Dysplasia history, he told me that he could guarantee that the puppies won't have it, as the parents are x-rayed for it, and that since he started, he's produced and sold over 50 puppies all of which ended up being Hip Dysplasia free as they grew up. And then he added "as the ad says, the father is SG3 rated in Germany, as both parents were imported from Germany, and were registered there as free of Hip Dysplasia". Do you think that guarantees the puppy free of the disease? I still haven't visited the guy or seen the puppies.
Do you think this guy is honest? Do you think I should go for it? I would really hate to have to watch my dog suffer in pain until death. Please help if you know enough about this subject. Thank you.
SG3 is a show rating and it means sergut (very good). The order of passable ratings is VA, V, SG, G. If it is a show line than it is a failure if it isn't VA or V. If it is a working line SG is pretty good, but who really cares about their show rating (presuming it wasn't failing) on a working line. It is their Schutzhund or HGH titles and scores that actually mean a thing for a working line, and those titles do mean something with show lines too, although not as critical that they're high. The title they must posess to be considered eligible for breeding in Germany is a Koerklasse, either KKl2 or KKl1. If the parents don't have these titles don't consider them any further. This is where the American Shepherd came from, people who shouldn't have bred dogs either because of bad temperment, bad hips, excessive angulation, or improper size did it anyway for whatever reason. A KKl title means that the dog is titled in Schutzhund or HGH (proven workability), good temperment, proper physical structure, no or few physical defects, and that it is not inbred. This is the difference between American and German lined dogs. This is why German bloodlined dogs are so much higher quality, one dog can work hundreds of sheep at a time, while an American bloodline bred cuz it looked cute will run away from sheep or kill it.
It is possible that they will guarantee to take the dog back if it has hip dysplasia, but their guarantees mean nothing if they're not in writing. All reputable German Shepherd breeders put what they're guaranteeing in writing, and signed by both parties, as it is a two way commitment. Guarantees will vary from breeder to breeder.
The only way to stop indiscriminate breeding practices leading to dogs with terrible health and even worse temperments is to never buy from backyard breeders, ensuring that the parents have a KKl title, and only buying German Shepherds who breed for the improvement of the breed. You can verify this by looking up the parents on one of the two sites
