I have a German Shepherd dog who's 8 yrs old and a couple of weeks ago he suddenly had difficulty getting up..?
I have a German Shepherd dog who is 8 years old and a couple of weeks ago he suddenly had difficulty getting up and walking. Recently he has loss of appetitie and a general disinterest in most things. We took him to the vet shortly after we noticed the first symptom of difficulty moving and gave him antibiotics (Doxycycline) and a painkiller (Rimadyl) and tested him for Lyme's, which came back negative. I would appreciate any information and help - thank you!
It could be Hip Dysplasia or Arthritis
HIP DYSPLASIA: The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint: the head of the femur (thigh bone) is the ball, and
the pelvic bone forms the socket. Hip dysplasia occurs when the ball is loose in the socket.
ARTHRITIS: Signs that your dog may have arthritis:
Favoring a limb
Difficulty sitting or standing
Sleeping more
Seeming to have stiff or sore joints
Hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs
Weight gain
Decreased activity or less interest in play
Attitude or behavior changes
Being less alert
I really hope he doesn't and it's just a quick thing, but if it is, I'd take him back to the vet and ask to check for both Arthritis and Hip Dysplasia. Soon, if it's either, he may have a really hard time climbing stairs.
It's a sad thing to see in the dogs we know and love, but just be there for him and root him on. Tell him it'll be okey dokey =)
Sometimes it gets so bad that owners decide the best thing to do is euthanize the dog. But only if it gets to the point of no return. If the dog ends up not even being able to go outside to poop, or to your side for food, then you know when to make the tough decision.
