Getting a German shepherd?
Does anybody have any information on getting a German shepherd? I would like one bred for work instead of show (i.e. no slanted back). How much should I expect to pay for a dog like this and where could I get one? Another thing I really want to do is adopt retired Military Working Dogs and give them a good home, but I also want to raise and train one of my own. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
All German Shepherds have the sloped back; it's part of what they are.
Don't make artificial separations between show and work lines. In Germany, in order to be allowed to breed, a dog must pass a physical by a breed warden, who is charged by the parent club with keeping the German Shepherd Dog true to Captain von Stephanitz's original vision. A pass by such a warden is equivalent to a breed championship in any other country.
Further, in Germany, that pass by the warden is only one step. The dog also has to qualify in obedience competition, in tracking and in bitework, and has to have passing-quality hips (verified by x-ray).
The purpose of all of this is that dogs bred under this regimen are much more likely to be sound, sane and smart... which is what made the GSD the world-famous dog-of-all-trades that it is.
There are groups of people outside of Germany following the same regimen, using the conformation show ring to replace the breed warden's inspection. Some, especially some Schutzhund groups in the US, have even taken the trouble of inviting well-respected breed wardens over from Germany and presenting the cream of their puppy crops for inspection.
