What questions should a golden retriever breeder ask potential buyers before selling them to him/her?
I have 8 AKC golden retriever puppies. This is my first litter and I am wanting to become a serious hobby breeder. I will not give my puppies to anyone with money. I need to make sure they are serious pet owners. I figure i should ask if they have a vet, if they have had other pets and if they got rid of any and why, why they want the dog, if they plan to keep it indoors or out, and if they have a lot of time to spend with it as goldens are real "people dogs" and need a lot of attention. Can anyone give me any other ideas of what I need to check out?
A few questions to get you started:
Are you aware that Goldens can be in their "naughty" stage for up to 3 years? How will you deal if he eats your couch, your favorite shoes, or your antique dining table?
Where will the dog live?
What rooms will he be allowed in, if allowed indoors (and if they mention outdoors, tell them no).
How will you deal with yellow hair all over everything you own?
How will you housetrain?
Where will the dog stay while you are out of the house?
What happened to your previous pets?
Who is your vet? (call for references, and ask questions about health and care of previous pets)
How do you plan to exercise your Golden?
Do you own your home? If you rent, how long have you been there, and do you have proof of landlord acceptance? If you rent, what will you do when you move?
What will you feed your Golden and why?
How would you handle things like: peeing in the house? A bite (your child or anyone else)? Chewing? Barking?
How much is too much money to spend at the vet?
Will you commit to yearly exams, spaying/neutering, overall health for life? What would you do if you found that the dog needed medication for life? How much would you be willing to spend per month if the dog had an illness requiring permanent medication?
What brand of flea/tick/heartworm preventative did your last dog use?
Just some ideas to get you started on how to screen. Use "trick" questions...it helps you screen the good owners from the bad. Rather than ask if the dog will live indoors or out, simply ask...where will the dog's primary residence be? Don't ask simple questions, and don't lead the question by asking a multiple choice question...ask open ended ones...it helps you get more honest answers...good luck.
