Golden Retriever Dog Breeders Listing Q&A

Respectable Breeders In California?

I live in Northern California (Berkeley), and I was wondering if there were good breeders for the breeds listed below (don't have to be pure bred). Does anyone know someone or is someone who breeds these kind of dogs?

Labrador Retriever (white, black, yellow, I don't care)
Golden Retriever
Siberian Husky

Thank you very much guys!
Yes, I have done my research on dogs ;)

The way to do this is to start with the American Kennel Club website:

http://www.AKC.org

Then go to the page of the breed that you're interested in. Each breed will have what is called a "parent club", which is their national breed club, and a link to their website should be on that page. Then, from the national breed club page, you should be able to find a breeder referral page.

You're saying that you want a respectable breeder, but then that you don't care that they're purebred. A good breeder doesn't breed mixes.

All of these breeds are susceptible to hip dysplasia, which is a painful and crippling orthopedic disorder. The cost of hip replacements in my area these days is $5-6,000. So, it's worth paying a little more to pay a good show breeder. The AKC website has a lot of good information for prospective puppy buyers.

The other thing you can do is to check out Petfinder's website. There are plenty of purebred dogs of those breeds looking for homes in your area. Puppies are fun, but they don't know anything, so they do tend to potty in the wrong place and chew on everything. They need someone to come home during the day to let them out for a few months, or they won't get potty trained.

You might want to consider getting an older puppy or an adolescent, or even an adult dog. Some of my best dogs came to me when they were 2 yo, so don't discount the adult dogs.

Here's how to avoid the puppymills:

http://www.stoppuppymills.com

Most puppymills these days are focusing on small, non-shedding breeds, but there are plenty of backyard breeders (BYB) popping out labs, goldens, and sibes. Stay away from websites advertising puppies. Do start with the national breed club.

Remember, the cost of a puppy is a drop in the bucket for the costs that you're going to have over the lifetime of the dog. So, trying to save a hundred bucks on the cost of the puppy may literally cost you THOUSANDS in the future. It's that penny-wise, pound-foolish thing.

Good luck. Happy searching!
