Labradoodles or goldendoodles?
considering getting one of them
is there a difference? anybody own one of these? are they good pets? pros and cons? please show pictures of your dog if possible!!
let me just say that these are mixes of breeds before more people come and freak out.
golden retriever and poodle and
labrador and poodle.
they are not mutts, they are officially breeds. the breeders are usually those of which have been breeding for generations, so they are not "backyard breeding" and if you do not agree, just don't answer. thanks.
First a little history. These dogs came into existence for the purpose of producing a service dog for people with allergies to dog dander. It is roughly a 3 generation task to produce the desirable repeatable characteristics i.e. low dander, no shed, proper size, etc. It also takes several years for any new breed to be recognized, but remember all dogs were bred from wolves or other canines, so thus meet your definition of mutt.
Like all popular breeds many unscrupulous characters grind out junk dogs for a quick buck. I have a Labradoodle that is an F1B (second generation 3/4 poodle 1/4 lab) that does not shed (important for an inside dog) and has many of the desirable characteristics of both breeds. She is a great pet and is very intelligent and easily trained. The few Golden Doodles I have been around are also delightful, loving pets that are very healthy.
The biggest drawback is that they tend to be expensive often over a $1000, for a third or later generation dog. I got mine for much less as she is 2nd generation. I have had poodles in the past and know many labs but found this to be a good combo. Besides there is nothing wrong with mixed breed dogs, I also have a Great Pyrenees- Golden Retriever cross and a Great Pyrenees - Border Collie mix who are great outside dogs that protect my horses and are a delight to be around.
