ok, so on this forum Im on, we are discussing danes guarding/protecting, everyone has it in their heads that their dog WILL protect them if needed...

What people necessarily think isn't what actually happens. There's a difference between fantasy and reality
Everyone wishes or wants that miracle dog that jumps out and bites the robber or threat, and saves the day, but with millions of dog owners and sensible people, we all know that is not the case.
You can't depend on an untrained dog to miraculously protect you, many will abandon you at the sniff of a piece of meat.
A dog that has been trained is more reliable.
