Great Dane resuce?
I just adopted a great dane form rescue in New Orleans. She is 18 months old and heart worm positive, right now she is on the slow kill heartguard method. My private vet is recommending the heart worm shots, but I do not know if its a good idea. It is going to be really hard to keep this huge pup still for a month. Any advice?
We had a dog that we rescued with heartworm and did the shots. I was worried about keeping her still, but it worked out okay. We kept her crated when we weren't home, to make sure she didn't get too rambunctious with our other dog. When we were home, we let her out but always supervised her to make sure she wasn't straining herself with anything. They can usually walk around the house and stuff, but are supposed to avoid walks, running around the yard, running up and down steps, etc. We limited how much Annie could do and her final heartworm test came back negaitve, so she was fine. Good luck and good job on rescuing a dog that really needed it.
My understanding of the HW situation is so many rescues from New Orleans tend to have HW because it is carried by mosquitoes and transmitted when dogs get bit. After Katrina, there was so much standing water, mosquitoes bred everywhere and HW became more prevalent.
