can i get a new dog with one still around?
My family has a seven year old Black Labrador. she loves most people, but with age she has started to walk away from strangers when they try to pet her. I want to get a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog puppy. Would the dogs tolerate each other? a little personal experience would be nice.
Before considering getting another dog I would investigate further why your dog is less interested in strangers than she used to be. Some dogs do get less social with age but it could also be a sign of discomfort or illness. Perhaps a check up at the vets is in order?
When deciding whether to get a new pup or first make sure that you will be doing the right thing by your lab... Ask yourself - does she enjoy the company of other dogs? Will she cope with a large breed baby/adolescent dog jumping all over her? Will she still get the same amount of attention from the family when the pup arrives? If the answer is no to any of these questions it is best not to get a pup.
You also need to ask yourself if your family has the time, energy and finances to responsibly care for a second dog. A new puppy is very time consuming.
If you decide that getting a second dog is a good choice then i'd strongly suggest a male. There is generally less risk of aggression between a male and a female than between 2 females or 2 males. Of course, i hope your female is already desexed and that you would get a male desexed as well. Generally the best match is between 2 - 4 years age difference in two dogs living together, so perhaps you could consider a 3 - 5 year old rescue dog instead of a puppy? This could be a lot easier on your lab as a 3 - 5 year old dog will be a lot more mature and less off a pest to her. Also, you will be able to better judge if she would get along with the dog in the long term.
If you are stuck on the idea of a pup make sure that you give your lab lots of "time out" so that she may have some walks on her own or just some quiet time getting cuddles. This way she won't feel like she has to compete for your attention and hopefully won't take it out on the pup. Crate training the pup is also a good idea, so that you can put it in the crate for nap time and further give your girl some alone time.
Finally, there is no definite way to tell if the dogs will tolerate each other in the long term but you can reduce the risk. Introducing the dogs in neutral territory is a good start, making sure you feed them seperately and have seperate toys and beds available for them will also help avoid resource guarding. Also, having well trained dogs will give you more control over there interactions.
