What do people think about Greater Swiss Mountain dogs.?
I want a Swissy, but would like to know how they are when it comes to training and obedience. Tell me everything you know about them. I have researched so I'm looking for someone who has legit experience. Also Recomendation of breeders East of the Missisippi.
I have a 2 year old Swissy. He is a wonderful dog and a great companion, HOWEVER we are still taking obedience classes. As a breed, they are very headstrong and do not submit authority well. This is not saying he is not a great dog, and I do NOT want to turn you off the breed, but just want to let you know that every day is a training day! The other person who posted was correct in saying go to the Greater Swiss website and get all of the info you can. Most breeders welcome phone calls and inquires, and maybe if you are able, you can visit some. There are a few good books out there too about the ups and downs. I think every breed has it's issues, swissies as a whole take a long time to mature, my guy was not housetrained until 10 months old. He needs a job and an outlet for his energy, plan on long walks and think about joining the local swissy club so you can participate in things like carting and backpacking, jobs that these dogs were bred for. I hope you go through with your plan on getting a Swissy, your life will definitly change for the better!
One of the best kennel websites I have found is http://www.aegisgsmd.com/. I am not affiliated with this breeder and did not get my dog from her, but I found it an excellent website full on information about the breed as a whole. There is no sugar coating over the negatives, and the joys and highlights of these dogs is also right there on the page. And they are east of the Mississippi
