Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Training Q&A

Overexcited pooch?

I have a 1-year-old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog/Aussie mix. He is a sweet boy, but he was abused before we got him. He's unbelievable for a formerly abused pooch, but he has some odd habits that need weaning.

One especially important difficulty is training him. He responds to commands to do tricks or commands to come, stay, etc. However, he is hypersensitive to praise. He knows if he does it right, he will be praised and possibly given a treat. Because of this, he CANNOT sit still or stay where he is for more than 5 seconds. I know he's trying, but he gets such a rush that he can't control himself.

I don't know how to work this out of him. He's a good boy, but training is almost impossible because of this. Help!

Don't reward him if he squirms or gets up. Wait until he does what he is asked to correctly and is sitting/laying politely to praise him. Work on this with basic commands that he knows well first. Eventually he will get the idea.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Training Q&A

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog?

Are you smart? - How to walk off the leash, fetching, training more than just obedience Any advice on this? How they are "only interested in the comments are appreciated

My elderly neighbor Switzerland is extremely intelligent and well behaved, although she still acts like a puppy 3 years of age. This is a breed of dog that you need to start training as soon as you receive the puppy.
