How To Train A Saint Bernard Puppy Q&A
What to expect with my St. Bernard puppy?
I just got a 8 week old saint, I've read alot about the breed but books leave me wanting more. Just hoping to get some advice from some fellow saint owners about how to make him the most comfortable, happy and well trained dog i can. Also any little saint quirks you may have noticed. Thank you
I have a St. Bernard, but adopted him as an adult from a rescue. Never had a Saint puppy, but it wouldn't be any different than having any other large breed puppy.
You need to make sure he gets a lot of socialization--puppy classes, introducing him to strange places, people, and other animals (including cats!). Make sure you feed him a excellent quality large or giant breed puppy food--and yes, the quality of food does matter!
Start to get him used to you grooming him--brush him a lot, play with his feet and start trimming his nails, give him a bath, clean his ears with an approved ear cleaner. I've noticed with my Saint that they are proned to ear infections and matting. The sooner you get him used to grooming, the better.
Keep him up to date on his vaccines, heartworm, and flea/tick prevention. It will be expensive for the meds since he will be so big, but it is important and cheaper for you to prevent problems rather than treat them after the fact.
Make sure that he does not get overweight. I hate to see people with larger breed dogs that brag about them weighing 175lbs. just because they think it is cool. Keep your dog at a good weight for his bone structure. Your vet can keep you informed of this. My Saint only weighs 110lbs, though I've seen them much larger than this. You don't want him to be fat and develop joint and hip problems.
Keep a towel handy...Saints drool a lot when they are hot or excited. They also get eye goo.
And last but not least...walk him, walk him, walk him! This not only helps to strengthen your bond, but it makes him more active and healthy, and also helps socialize him to new surroundings, people, and animals. Trust me, these dogs may seem lazy for the most part, but they are very strong and I have seen severely aggressive ones that the owners cannot control. DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN!
Enjoy your Saint, but remember with him being so large food and meds will be very expensive! Saints are extremely proned to being abandoned on the streets or taken to a shelter because people can no longer afford them. That is how I ended up with mine.

How To Train A Saint Bernard Puppy Q&A
Having a four-month-old puppy?
My finance and I have a four month old baby, and decided that we would have a dog. My main concern is how to give the puppy and baby the same amount of attention ... and how we train our puppy to get along with the baby. I have fear that the dog will be bad for the baby and I want that to happen. Any advice? We're getting a St. Bernard / English mastiff mix.
Both the SB and MS are big dogs, but puppies puppies. I have two mastiffs and I can tell my husband and I told him it would be almost impossible to have a baby and a giant breed puppy from our experience. Our dogs are older now and absolutely wonderful, but the first year was like having a child ... tweaking ... pees on the carpet, etc ... One must understand that all puppies nip and take training every day to help them understand not to use their mouths. It is even more difficult with a large breed, because your puppy will have large very quickly. Realize that will have a 40 pound puppy nipping you. There is aggression and does not mean the spirit is what the puppies until someone can not the trains. It's just much more difficult with the giant breeds, and can quickly draw blood from their pinching. Also, I'm not sure what yours will mastiffs temperament, but needs a lot of socialization. They may be prone to shy dogs are shy and fearful dogs. A dog that is afraid of things is showing aggression. To combat this it is necessary to enroll in obedience classes, taking them places, etc. So I recommend crate training. However, dogs can only keep your bladder for their age, more than 1 hour. So if you have a puppy of eight weeks is 2 months. So basically, he / she can only MAX hold for 3 hours. Once you get up to a year to have more control, but as puppies is hard. SB and MS also are prone to UTI we do not want to remain the most often. I would like to get some Kongs and bones and occasionally put the puppy in the crate for 30-40 minutes for the dog used her, and give you and your baby some alone time. In order to ensure that then get along, you need to take the puppy and the baby for long walks. This demonstrates that the dog that you are a pack and also the tires puppy to be less according to interior. However, since you are getting a puppy race Giant remember not to date or that can damage the joints of dogs. Good luck!
