My dog hates other animals?
I have a Black Lab, and she really hates other animals. We've had her for about 5 years, and she was about 2 years when we got her. We've been thinking about getting another dog(maybe a saint Bernard), but we're afraid that if we get one, or any other dog, she'll just try to killhurt it...or it'll kill/hurt her. Does anyone know how I could like 'train' her or whatever?
We don't have any "dog parks" or training classes where we live, sooo.. :/
I agree with Glenn, however I also think it's never too late to train a dog. It's certainly harder the older they are, but it isn't impossible. Take her for some training classes; she more than likely is just overprotective of you and the house, which she considers her territory, and the specialists will be able to give you some tips on what to do when she's acting aggressive.
What usually happens when you get another dog though, if it's younger, and especially because your dog is female, the current dog will "adopt" it and treat it like it's its own young. Dogs have built-in instincts that allow them to become surrogate parents for younger ones; it assists with the survival of the species dating back to wolves so that young can survive and still be taught and protected by older animals if their parents die.
I'm not saying it's guaranteed to happen, some dogs, like humans, are just wired differently. I'd get a class or two in to be safe, or at least keep a VERY sharp eye on that puppy when you get it and never leave the two alone together until it's bigger. Get it a crate to protect it when you leave the house; the crate will also assist with the dog's housebreaking. Ask the trainers about this too; they'll give you more details.
A little tidbit on the Saint Bernard: I know someone who breeds them and she says they drool A LOT. Just fair warning in case you didn't know that about them.
