Hernia on Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pups. Is it a big deal?
We're looking at some puppies, in which the entire litter has little hernias. The breeder said it's not big deal and that they can fix it easily when they are spayed. Can someone tell me if this is truly a minor surgury with good liklihood of success? Expensive?
Hey I'm a 3rd year Veterinary student, I'll try to help answering your question. If they are small hernias then they are pretty easy to repair at the same time as being spayed, and it's not an expensive procedure at all. There are two main/common hernias that occur in animals: umbilical (bellybutton hernia) and inguinal hernias. It's best to fix them early on, otherwise loops of intestine can be pushed through the hole (especially in large hernias), which can further complicate the situation (blood supply to intestine will become blocked and it can become necrotic (dead intestinal tissue)). If you are still unsure about what to do the best bet is to take the puppy to a veterinarian and let them take a look at it.

King Charles Spaniels heart problems?
I want a King Charles Spaniel and I know they are prone to hereditary heart problems. I know that can never be sure if the puppy will never have problems with your heart, but how can be the safest in the selection of dog? How can you be sure if the parents do not have? I've been looking everywhere by a local reputable breeder, but so far no luck. Any help will be great! Thanks =] anwen55 was not really aware that they were different races, thanks for that information. Do you know only the King Charles Spaniel can suffer from the problem? 
The parents can be tested and clear. Just ask any breeder to provide certification of both parents before considering a puppy. You must also be concerned about Syringomyelia, a devastating brain / skull and disorder of the spine in the Cavs. If memory serves, the dogs must be 5 years old before being officially declared "free" from this horrible disease.
