If a breeder is registered with the AKC, does that necessarily mean that they are reliable?
My family is soon to purchase a puppy from a breeder that is a member of the AKC Parent Club of the Labrador Retriever. Should this mean that she is trustworthy? The puppies seem healthy enough, but we want to know for sure that she is a good breeder.
AKC papers only mean that their parents have been regostered with AKC. It does not mean that you are guaranteed quality pups, it does not mean that the breeder is reputable, or anything else, only that you have a paper saying your dogs are registered with AKC. I know of one breeder who is about as bad as they get. She starts breeding her dogs when they are barely one, breeds every cycle until at least 7 yr old which means in 7 yr they have had about 14 litters. In one years time, they spend 4 months pregnant, 5 weeks in heat, and another 4 months nursing/raising their babies. That doesn't leave much time for just being a beloved pet does it. This is breeding your dog to death. A backyard breeder in every sense of the word. She thinks because her dogs are AKC registered that nothing else matters. She is a lowlife scum of the breeding world.
Also it is easy to register non-registered dogs. Say you have 2 AKC registered dogs. They both die. You can go out, buy 2 dogs of unknown origin, register the pups with the papers from the dead dogs. Breeders have been doing this for decades. Not reputable breeders of course, but still, it happens. Check out the breeder you buy from. Get references from their vet and from previous buyers. Go to their homes and see where and how the dogs are raised. If things do not feel right, go somewhere else.

Good deal?? From a reputable breeder?
well I just got a puppy last Sunday. paid $ 1300, more than a Labrador Retriever puppy purebred. which is 3 months old. Well, I got it from a reputable breeder. I know it's a reputable breeder because inspect our house, if you really can take care of the puppy. we also have to wait months before getting the puppy. The contract also provided that will take the dog back at any time though old if I can not take care of it. Did we get a good deal?? Both parents are registered with the AKC. The puppy also has also the pedigree. both parents were champion bloodlines. so we have a good deal?
All of this means nothing without their parents health tested and shown to parents.
