List Of Doberman Pinscher Breeders Q&A
What to ask a breeder?
I have been training for four years in agility showmanship rally and obedience with a puppymill dachshund in akc. I am finally getting a dog with greath bloodline and I don't know what to say to this breeder. I want one of his best dogs because I plan to go to the top with this one. It is a great breeder and has won a lot in westminster and eukanuba. I don't know what to tell him because I don't want to sound stupid. The breed is Doberman pinscher and sorry about the grammar Im typing this from my phone that is breaking. If u need more details just ask and I will quickly reply. Any help would he great. I have never not qualified in rally and I'm in excellent. I have been training in obedience forever and I have never not been pulled for the short list in showmanship. I have also fully trained my dogs for advance agility and are on teams.
Heath testing. Ask for OFA numbers which you can verify on the OFA's online database. Ask to see heath test results for Cardio (should be holter or EKG), DNA testing for vonWilliebrands or testing on the parents of the dog is clear by paternity, OFA for hips and elbows you will access by the number you are given, CERF should also be on the OFA site. Ask about a history of CVI (Wobblers) in their lines, history of DCM (Cardio) in their lines, history of early onset cancer etc
Ask what they hope to accomplish from this breeding, why they chose to pair these two particular dogs (how the complement each other) Etc.
What titles they have on their dogs (both confirmation and performance)
Expect to answer as many questions as you ask.
Based on your question I'm not really sure what you are looking for in a dog. Are you looking for a show quality puppy to show in confirmation or are you only looking to compete in non-conformation events (rally, obedience, junior showmanship)
If you are looking for a confirmation puppy and if this is indeed a top breeder expect that you may be turned down for a show puppy from their lines as top breeders tend to place show puppies with people with a history of finishing there dogs and often with people that will campaign the dog. Since you have no history of serious showing you are likely to be turned down. However even if you are turned down if they feel you are suitable to the breed they will likely refer you to another breeder they feel is a good match for you.
If you are not looking for a confirmation puppy then they may consider you for a pet quality puppy from these lines especially if you plan on competing in performance events with it. However expect to what for quite a while (years) to get a puppy from a top breeder as they typically have long waiting lists for their puppies.
Also just a not based on you mentioning showman ship I am assuming you are not an adult. Some breeder may be unwilling to talk to you and they will defiantly not sell you a puppy (most breeder will not sell to anyone under 21) So you have 2 options: Start off by telling them your age explain that your parents will be purchasing the dog (I assume), but you will be the one competing with it and see if they are willing to talk to you at least for the initial conversation, or option 2 have one of your parents call and talk to them.
