Louisiana Dog Breeders Q&A
Advice on puppy vaccinations...?
First let me say that I live in Louisiana and I am getting a chihuahua next week. She will be seven weeks old at the time I get her. The breeder that I am getting her from gets the first set of shots done. My question is, when should I bring her to get the second set of shots and how much should I expect it to be. This will be the very first dog that I own so I am very new to this. I am going to call some vets and get prices, but I wanted to find out what other people paid so that I can compare the prices and make sure that I am not being ripped off. Thanks.
I am not going to choose a vet on price alone. I have ferrets now and I really like the vet that I bring them to so I am thinking about bringing the pup there, but some family members have suggested other vets to try out. So I will check with them for prices. If I don't feel comfortable with the vet then I won't go.
For puppies, the vaccine protocol my clinic uses is as follows (if the vaccines are started at 6 weeks, sometimes we don't start them until 8):
6 weeks - 1st DH2PP (distemper, hepatitis type 2, parvovirus, and parainfluenza)
8 weeks - 2nd DH2PP
12 weeks - 3rd DH2PP, 1st Bordatella
16 weeks - Final DH2PP, 2nd/final Bordatella, 1st Rabies, each good for 1 year.
In a year when she receives her next DH2PP and Rabies, they would then be good for 3 years.
Here's the breakdown - DH2P is the MINIMUM you should give your dog every 4 weeks until she is 4 months old. We add the Parainfluenza because it does help protect against some upper respiratory infection, and when later combined with the Bordatella vaccine, provides the combination we call 'Kennel Cough' vaccine.
If your vet includes an 'L' or a 'C' in the combination, these stand for Leptospirosis and Corona virus. Leptospirosis is NOT advised for small dogs ever, and not even for larger dogs who are not exposed to the lepto bacteria (spread through wild and livestock animal urine). Corona virus is a regional thing, I'm not familiar with Louisiana's particulars in that area.
I would advise specifically requesting that the Lepto not be given at all, your dog will never need it, and small dogs are at a greater risk for severe reaction to the vaccine itself when given. In addition, overvaccination is one of the main causes of autoimmune disease (where the immune system starts attacking its own body) and kidney disease later in life. Find a vet who separates the DH2PP (or DH2P) from the Lepto vaccine.
Also, don't forget at her age she needs more dewormings with Pyrantel Pamoate to get rid of those roundworms. This should be given every 2 weeks for at least 2 doses to break the life cycle of the roundworm and relieve her of that burden while she grows.
Oh, forgot to add what we charge, though in California our pricing is probably different, but for the DH2PP we charge $16 to give, Bordatella is $12 something, and rabies is $14. We use only Merial recombinant and killed virus vaccines, which have been clinically proven to be the safest in both dogs and cats (least incidence of vaccine-induced sarcomas - cancers).
Congratulations on your new puppy!

Louisiana Dog Breeders Q&A
Dobermann?
I currently have a dobe! I can not believe what great dogs they are. Intelligent and easily trained. They take very good agility training and obedience. And they love the game. I live in Houma Louisiana wondering if anyone knows where to find troughout Doberman breeders Louisiana. If you have names and RESOURCE its easy points for you. Thanks I'm not sure what that says Brij .. Are you saying that you have a liter or SUMIN?
No "have an idea of what is trying to Brij conveny but Doberman Pinscher breed is wonderful (as discovered). The DPCA has a breeder referral site and contact information. They can contact Member DPCA breeders in Louisiana - Depending on where you are in Louisiana, which could be in the Houston area farmers as well. There are a number of breeder member / fans in Louisiana. Know that simply because someone refers to you not necessarily mean that knowledge, responsible breeders, as there are also those who are simply bybers and millers puppy that has happened to get through the accession process (I know several of those so be careful). Find a good mentor breeder of race that can help to discern a good breeder. I know there will be upcoming shows in Louisiana so they might want to check online at the site superintendent Onofrio for local and Dobermans date and when shown and see them, and what you like dogs in particular - see the matter discussed with the owners or breeders / exhibitors - but be careful not try to talk to them because they are preparing to go in the ring because its focus is on getting your dog (s) in the ring so that it can not be terribly receptive below. I think Jim Briley still in Louisiana - which is doberman Aquarium and has produced some excellent dogs and is a great resource - I might be able to help you find Good breeders in your area. Has a website up as I recall you have contact information. Check out the DPCA and UDC websites for a large amount of information and breeder referral. Good luck! PS I am in Texas and would be happy to help in any way I can.
