I have a 17 wk Maltese, AKC registered & I wanted to breed, but he has 1 undescended testicle, what do I do?
My 17 week old maltese male is fully AKC registered (I purchased him in part BECAUSE he was AKC) & I wanted to breed him, but he has 1 undescended testicle and the vet says I should get him neutered. However, neutering a dog w/ an undescended testicle is considered a "dog spay" and costs a lot more. Now I am not able to breed him, PLUS I have to spend more on neutering him. I called the breeder and she gave me a hard time (they are older and didn't really understand what I was saying). What should I do?
I appreciate all of your answers, but I am asking what do I do with the breeder? not the dog. I would never place this little guy in harms way.
Sounds like you didn't get him from a good breeder.
If you paid extra for a show/breeding dog, then the breeder should refund the difference.
If you simply bought an "AKC" dog, that does NOT imply that he is breeding quality, it just means that he is purebred. However many breeders would refund the difference in price between a regular neuter and one involving a retained testicle.
What does your contract say?
