How do you go about finding a good dog breeder?
I would really like a dog. Maybe a yorkie or maltese. So how would I go about looking for one
Well what you don't do is google maltese or yorkies.
The majority of those websites (if not all) are puppymills.
If you don't know what a puppymill is, visit http://www.stoppuppymills.org/ or http://www.adoptdontshop.com/
To find a reputable, responsible breeder, you'll want to visit shows and talk to the handlers/breeders there. Or you can view the breed club website; there they have a list of breeders who should be responsible & ethical.

If you're just looking for a pet quality pup, I would definitely check out http://www.petfinder.com/
it's an adoption based website where you can view dogs of all breeds, sizes, including purebreds, mixes, and puppies in your area.
Also avoid buying from newspaper ads, those are people breeding dogs for the sake of cash.
Here is a general idea of what an ethical/responsible breeder does do:
Never breeds more than 2 breeds
Has 1 (sometimes 2) litters a YEAR.
Only breeds dogs with health clearances
Only breeds dogs that have titles, Championships
Actively Competes with their dogs in work/show
Can show pedigrees for parents(showing health tested/champion dogs)
Will take the pup back for ANY reason at any time
Sell their dogs on limited registration (spay/neuter) contract
Has their dogs Registered with a reputable kennel club
NEVER breed mixes, teacup, tiny; mini, micro or 'babydoll' face pups
Usually has a waiting list
The Breeder will Question you! A lot! and may even ask you to fill out a questionare
Is knowledgable about the breed, the breed standard, showing ,genetic issues,
Wants to be part of the dog's life after it is sold
Doesn't breed dogs under the age of 2 years
