Is there a minimum distance a cop has to be tailing you to justify a speeding ticket?
I got pulled over within a minute of getting onto the onto the freeway and parked within two exits. I mapped out the total distance from my entering the freeway to exiting at about 1.7 miles. I don't think I was pulled over until I accelerated to and merged lanes. So there's a good chance that I was driving less than a mile before being pulled over.
I heard that there's a law in california that the cop needs to be observing your speed for a certain distance before pulling you over. Or something to that effect. Is this true?
Whether its in writing or not, I do not know, but the usual rule, nationwide, is 1/4 of a mile if he is clocking (following) you. Courts have long ruled that is sufficient distance to establish another vehicles speed. The only argument you could have is when was the last time his speedometer was calibrated? He can prepare for this by driving his car through a radar sight at a specific speed and having the officer with the radar gun sign a card verifying accuracy. Good luck.
