Will 2 male dogs get along?
I have a very friendly miniature Schnauzer who is a 6 year old male (he is neutered). So far our dog has been excellent with our kids (now toddlers) and the dog even loves our pet guinea pig. He licks the guinea pig and wags his tail (the guinea pig couldn't care less).
I've been wanting to get a Yorkie mix (Maltese and Yorkie) for a long time, and when I went to finally look at some puppies for sale my husband and I found the puppy we love most is also a male.
Will the two dogs get along when the puppy is older, or is getting another male dog a bad idea? I don't want to live with dog fights or keeping the dogs separated.
Anyone with two male dogs who has advice???
The fact that your Schnauzer is an older dog that is well established in your household already will make it difficult for the two dogs to get along. Your puppy will love everybody and everything but the older dog will not be so forgiving. Dogs do not share and there's a pack order. Expect to have your Schnauzer put the puppy "in its place" quite a few times. These corrections should be allowed as long as the Schnauzer is not causing the puppy physical harm. Two male dogs is even harder to deal with because as the puppy gets older (despite being neutered) will want to challenge the pack order and be the top male dog. It would be a lot easier for you to get a female puppy to avoid later confrontations. But just expect to have lots of little spats between the two for quite some time.
