What does this mean???????????
I'm looking at a dog breeders website for Newfoundlands, and I see one of the dogs (not for sale, just one of her pets) is pennHIP 80%. What does that mean? Also Cystinuria Normal and OFA Heard cleared (I know what those mean, but does pennHIP have to do w/ them?) Don't lecture me on buying from a breeder because that IS NOT WHAT I'M DOING.

PennHIP stands for the University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program.
Its a technology (x-ray) for hip evaluation and assesses the quality of the canine hip and measures hip joint laxity. The PennHIP method is used to predict the onset of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD), is the hallmark of canine hip dysplasia (CHD). The looser the joint or laxity, the greater the chance of DJD developing.
OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) is also an xray technology, but PennHIP has been shown scientifically more accurate at estimating hip quality.
