Neopolitan Mastiff?
Hi!
My husband and I own a two year old German Shepherd and are ready to add to our family. We have large breed experience and have been considering either an Irish Wolfhound or a Neo Mastiff. I already asked a similar question about the I.W. so now I ask.... Has anyone owned a Neopolitan Mastiff? If so, can you tell me about your experiences with the breed? Pros and cons? Know any breeders in the Ohio/Penn/W. Virginia area? Thanks!
to answer your question i HAVE researched the irish wolfhounds, but not the mastiffs yet. we just decided to consider them a few days ago, hope that helps!
It's actually Neapolitan Mastiff and they are great dogs. The national breed club http://www.neapolitan.org/ has a fantastic site that they link to - the rescue group. http://www.neorescue.net/abouttheneo.php?PHPSESSID=0ce6c437d24d080f3a074c9eace831bc I'm not pushing rescue, it's just that this site has real info on the breed and tons of great stuff.
They drool a ton, from bad breeders they can have some pretty serious health defects, and they are not incredibly active dogs as adults (unless pushed). They are also true mastiffs, meaning they are stubborn and thick headed.
They are very very different from an Irish Wolfhound. Have you done homework on the breeds yet? Other than both being big, they are polar opposites in many regards. Irish Wolfhounds are TRUE sighthounds.
They are active, have ahigh prey drive, and can never ever be trusted off leash. Extra special care needs to be taken with sighthounds because of their chase desire. A leash not held correctly and a cat across the street is a recipe for disaster.
They also tend to be very very sensitive to correction and punishment - and to medications and anesthesia.
Should you choose to call "mark" below, read this first: http://www.pbrc.net/breeding3.html so that you can recognize a good breeder. I didn't see a "mark" on the breeder referral list, but that doesn't mean that he's not good. Just beware.

I'm considering getting a German shepherd of this place, and I was wondering if any of you have reached this German Shepherd breeder or herd of them. If so, please let me know. Well, I for one would not be buying there. First warning is that Google immediately found 1,490 references! Obviously, a business rather than a genuine breeder - Second. Caveat is that the first page was a declared "_Old_Fashion_", a term that is both grammatical and instantly shows that the arrogant person chooses to ignore completely the International Standard of the GSD (see http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc) that has developed over the last 110 years by experts with extensive experience in grazing and protection and guide dog work, and approved by the WUSV (Union GSD Club World, with about 77 members nations) in 1991 and 2009. This first page also features a white GSD, some very muscular Mastiff puppies that seemed GSD GSD or crossings PBT and were definitely too big and heavy to work sheep or sitting in a S & R helicopter or monoplane, and a couple who had very narrow snout. So, obviously, not only do not obey the international standard, which do not even have a constant "" type ". I had to waste time waiting For pages with too many pictures (always a sign of an ignorant "breeder" who sold the photos beautiful and not by the achievements of his breeding stock) to transfer via the Internet before finding, in tests over 10, a page that said - for one dog - which was good OFA. Ignoring the worst run HD OFA system still around (so do not bother to go to the OFA site to see how many of the actions of this farm have been really xray with passes - one of the sins OFA is that it allows the owners have not displayed the error), which is totally unacceptable - breeding of each of anything like GSD border collie and size must have hips and elbows scored. I found no mention of the schemes show titles, no mention of training qualifications, no pedigree, no survey Race classifications. Despite proclaiming a guarantee, I could not find on their website, so suspect also that the Agreement are designed to protect the breeder not the buyer. And then I looked at the page that displays their kennels. Ye Gods! I know several people who run boarding kennels - kennels are not intended SE until this woman has! EAG are supposed to be raised as family dogs. However, this operator is obviously an arrogant BYBer has "progressed" a puppy-Miller and has a website full of "spin" phrases to attract the gullible ignorant. In no way does your website requirements for inclusion in The_GSD_Source. ANYONE can recommend a breeder without knowing you want to achieve with your pet. Rather than listening to strangers on the Internet should be attending dog training classes and see for yourself what the different lines resemble and act like. It should also be questions on some of the more than 400 YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of life with EAG. Home page of each group is told what are the aspects that they like to argue, and how active they are. Unlike AS, which was created for you to have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification.
