Portuguese Water Dog Rescue Q&A

Are Portuguese water dogs good at search and rescue if not what sport could he be good at how would i teach it?

I have just rescued a Portuguese water dog and was hoping to teach him a cool sport to occupy are time like search and rescue but i wish to know if this breed would be good at it or another sport like flyball or agility and how would i teach my dog these sports.

There are PWDs who do search and rescue. Personally, if I were using mine that way (I have 2), I would keep their hair cut pretty short. Other than that, sure they can do it. It really just depends on the drive of the dog. There are PWDs who do cancer detection, so, clearly, they can use their nose to find things. I also know PWDs who do very well in agility, tracking and obedience. The Portuguese Water Dog Club of America (and its regional clubs) also offer water trials, which is a water sport specifically designed for portuguese water dogs only. Newfies also have a form of this sport that is designed for them. Water trials are, in my opinion, the most fun. You can check it out at the web site I've included.

Portuguese Water Dog Rescue Q&A

Is it too late to start tracking?

I am a proud owner of a Portuguese water dog is 17 months old. The rescued from a local shelter when she was 6 months and have since fallen in love with him, I was wondering is, Is it too late to start tracking work with him, it seems that the end-sniffing dog, but it does smell around. I live in the Algarve, Portugal and have checked all clubs there. He has enough obedience to track down since he has gone to the public and training class will weekly and the coach says he is part of obedience, but not a specialist or a fan of track and so I can teach that? So is it too late to start?

My God, it's never too late to start tracking, if the dog is physically able. Join some watchlists on Yahoo and ask for some book recommendations.
