What is the best way to train my boxer to let me know when he has to go outside??
First off, how old is your puppy? Puppies' bladders and muscles mature as they age. An 8-10 week old puppy has to go every 1.5-2 hours; a 16 week old puppy has to go ever 4-6 hours; etc.
Hang a bell or noisemaker of some sort by the door you use to take the dog outside. Tell your dog, "Time to go out!" or "Time to go for a walk!" and put his leash on him. Take him to the front door and repeat the words, then use his paw to ring the bell. Tell him good boy and give him a small treat, then take him out. When you take him out, take him to the same spot every time and don't bring him back in until he goes. When he does go outside, praise him like crazy and give him another small treat.
Repeat this process every time you take him out and eventually he'll learn to ring the bell on his own.
Crating your puppy at night will also help avoid accidents. Dogs are naturally disinclined to shit where they sleep and contrary to what a lot of people think, crating is not mean or cruel; dogs are nesting animals, meaning they like having a small, dark, secure place to curl up in at night.
When you have to go out and leave your puppy at home for longer than he can 'hold it' in his crate, put him in a confined area with a 'pee pad'. These are waterproof pads treated with pheremones that attract the dog to use the pad as a toilet. You can buy them at any pet store. Make sure the enclosed area is big enough so that the pee pad doesn't interfere with the puppy's play area.
When you're at home, keep the puppy in the same room as you at all times. This ensures the dog's safety and also reduces the risk of accidents.
