Red Heeler Temperament Q&A
Where do I look to sign up for flyball/agility/etc?
My husband and I are getting a Red Heeler this Saturday. She's a young rescue but from the sounds of it, her temperament is great. I want to enroll in some sort of 'busy' activity with her.
What information do I need? Does she need to be tested in any way to prove she's able to enroll? Do I need to take any courses or classes to get a certification with her?
To do either sport, you will have to train for it.
So, for flyball, I suggest you find a local flyball team. They will help you teach your dog flyball. Your dog will have to learn how to hit the box and grab the ball, learn a swimmers turn, do a recall over the jumps, as another dog is passing. So there is self-control that is involved.
To find a local flyball club visit North American Flyball Assoc http://www.flyball.org
there is also http://www.flyballdogs.com
Same thing goes for agility, you will need to find an instructor who competes. Even if you think you are not interested in competing...only an instructor who competes will know best how to introduce equipment to your dog. You also have to learn, you will be taught crosses, lead-outs, sends. It's not only your dog, but your ability to communicate with him.
To find a local agility training facility (assuming your in the U.S.)
Clean Run http://www.cleanrun.com
United States Dog Agility Assoc http://www.usdaa.com
North American Dog Agility http://www.nadac.com
Canine Performance Events http://www.k9cpe.com
The above is a good place to start to try to find a local agility training facility.
