Saint Bernard House Training Q&A
Whats the best and quickest way to house/potty train a puppy?
We are getting our Saint Bernard on friday (he is 7weeks old) and need help before I make any mistakes. I want to do this right. Im sure you understand. Any info you might have is welcomed. thank you.
Crate training is the best method I've found. Find one that will be large enough to fit the dog once he has fully matured. Here's the key: make sure the area he has access to is only enough room for him to turn around in and lie down. Many crates come with dividers to allow your pet to grow. Naturally, dogs don't like to potty in the same area as they sleep. That's why you don't want to give your pet free roam of a room or house without direct supervision until they can be trusted.
As soon as you come home, take the puppy directly outside to give a potty break. Feeding multiple meals daily for a growing puppy is highly recommended, and about 15-30 minutes after eating is an excellent time to take him out. This is also helpful. Until you know how your puppy will do, you may not want to leave food or water in the crate since this will lead to the little one needing to relieve himself while you're not watching for his signs. A small amount of water should be ok.
I have trained my dog doing this, and many other clients I talk with love this method. I think it seems to be much quicker with better results since we are using the puppy's natural instincts to our advantage. It also protects your puppy and your belongings while you're out. There's very little mischief one can get into while staying in a crate. Now that my dog is older, I leave the door open on the crate if I am home. He really likes it. It's his own little "bedroom".
Good luck with the new addition! I hope all goes well!

Saint Bernard House Training Q&A
What kind of dog should I get?
I want a dog so bad. Whether a young dog or puppy, but probably only a young dog, because I do not think I have the time to train a puppy. I am a dental student full time, but I live in a house with a large fenced yard again and I want a partner to come home and play, take walks, and spoil! I like big dogs must be healthy and active with very few health problems of race. any suggestions? laboratory? golden retriever? rottweiler? San Bernardo? mastiff? Also, I have classes all day so I come home regularly throughout the day and go to a race in the morning and I, of course, take my dog with me.
For those who think that should wait until she has done for the school and the dog must think are stupid. YES, you have to do the best for a pet. But the average household in a dog is, both the husband and wife work. That is not different from the OP saying that she is a dental student full time. Think before email:. To the OP I love animals and have had many races. I would go with a Golden Retriever, Husky Lab or if you want a playful, loyal dog. Something like a hound Afghan if you want a more quiet and yet playful dog.
