Do australian shepherd puppies sometimes have smooth medium length hair instead of cottony fluffy hair?

i have been told that the working dogs sometimes have shorter coats, is that true?
Australian Shepherd Coat:
Hair is of medium texture, straight to wavy, weather resistant and of medium length. The undercoat varies in quantity with variations in climate. Hair is short and smooth on the head, ears, front of forelegs and below the hocks. Backs of forelegs and britches are moderately feathered. There is a moderate mane and frill, more pronounced in dogs than in bitches. Non-typical coats are severe faults.

Working AS's are bred for their working capability and health rather than the overall looks of them.

If all German Shepherd puppies born black?
We hope to get a German shepherd and I was doing research on them and realized that all the pictures of the puppies are black ... to do random colors like most? Or is that I happen to see only the darker images of German shepherds? Thanks!
Solids are born a solid color and will stay that way. Saddle / two-color puppies born mostly black, but you can see the color on the cheeks, ventilating, and legs. This will spread as the puppy grows until it reaches its final color at 12-18 months of age. Sable puppies are born with a dark dorsal stripe and lighter sides. As much vs black base color shows the side depends on how dark it is as adults. Will be clearer for the first couple of months go by coating puppy stages. As layer that occurs in adults, beginning to get dark again until the color of the final layer of 12-24 months -. EDIT I should have mentioned that really dark bi-colors may be born with no marks on the face or feet but you will see color in the vent. It may be only a few hairs at first but that will disseminate as the ages of the young and the marks appear in the normal places later.
