Dogs come in all shapes from Great Danes to Chihuahua - why don't cats?
Through artificial selective breeding techniques over the millenia we have greated dogs that are enourmous and dogs that are very small.
But why haven't we done the same with cats?
I can see the practical reasons why you wouldn't want a house cat the size of a Great Dane (imagine what it would do to the curtains!) but at some point in human history, some group of people for some reason (religious?) must have tried to genetically engineer cats in the same fashion.
Cats have been domesticated for thousands of years too.
I've heard stories of feral cats growing huge so there must be some tolerable variation in their DNA code.
Any biologists out there know the answer?
OBVIOUSLY I am talking about domestic cats.
Not wild cats like Lions and Tigers...doh!
My assumption is that cats weren't bred for all different reasons like dogs were. We've got hunting dogs (which vary in size depending on what is being hunted), we've got dogs meant to kill small vermin, we've got dogs that were bred strictly for companionship. The different uses to which we've put dogs means they're going to need to be different sizes. You don't want a Great Dane lap dog (although many think they are) and you don't want to be hunting with a Yorkshire Terrier.
Cats, as far as I can tell and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, kill small vermin and provide companionship when they feel like it. (I love cats. I have two of them, but one of them only loves me when I have food, a treat, or a toy. The other thinks he's a dog). There doesn't need to be the variability within cats because cats are already pretty darn good at those things.
Another thing, dogs want to please you therefore they are easy to train. Some breeds are harder to train than others and some want to please you less than others but for the most part they'll do anything to make you happy (or get that treat). Cats don't really care if they please you. They can be trained but it's more difficult. I'm also not entirely sure when house cats became a common occurrence. I think they were more likely to be outside pets until relatively recently. People probably didn't want their 40 pound cat eating their 10 pound lap dog.

what type of dog should I get?
hey i live in a house with a medium sized garden, my friends love small dogs. I am a fashion journalist and work a little at home so I'm looking for a small dog with a quieter nature and isn't too hiccups. I love pomeranians but I'm not sure what your mood is like. I know that all Dogs are different, but does anyone know of a race that is little known to be a little quieter? I will train and having to walk, but if theres a dog with a nature calmer than I know, id love to hear from you! Thanks!
