Recent vet check finds lots of medical problems with my rescue dog?
I have recently re-homed a springer spaniel from a dog rescue. Before taking the dog (and making a £150 donation) I pointed out my concern over a lump on the dogs bottom. I was told that this was due to an infection following recent neutering and was not an issue. No other issues were pointed out.
When I got the dog checked over by my local vet they found the following:
Two perenial hernias (the lump on the bottom being one of them)
Enlarged spleen (waiting to find out what this is all about)
Chronic ear infection
Underweight
Stitches still in place from neutering
Now note that this dog went through a registered charity dog rescue in Ireland where he was neutered then to another vet in England to treat an infection post neutering. I find it hard to believe that neither of these organisations noticed any of the issues that have since been discovered.
Where do I stand on all of this?
A little love and attention may make all the difference to your dog. Chances are he hasn't had much up till now - dog rescue centres do their best but have hundreds to care for, while you can offer him one to one time. The ear infection and underweight are probably due to the difficult circumstances he had before he was first rescued. you mentioned post neutering infection - could explain why the stitches are still in place, waiting for healing to be complete. I don't know if an enlarged spleen is age related, or if it is something to cause concern.
At http://www.provet.co.uk/petfacts/healthtips/spleen2.htm it is stated: - Enlargement of the spleen is a common finding in small animal veterinary practice and this may be due to many factors including chronic infections somewhere in the body .
You will need to be guided by your vet regarding the perineal hernias. http://www.thepetcenter.com/sur/ph.html explains very well what may need to be done
Where do you stand on all of this? You have just learnt that some animals in care have had a rougher start to life than you imagined, and he is a very lucky dog to have you to care for him. I'm sure he will reward you with years of devotion.
