Top German Shepherd Breeders Q&A
Can someone help mentor me on becoming a German Shepherd breeder?
Im looking into breeding german shepherds. I dont plan on doing so for a couple of years so i can learn all i can. Also will use only top lines. I do own a shepherd now but fixed him due to him not being close enough to the standard as a breeding dog should be. I have had other dog breeds but the GSD touched me in another way that others did not. Im looking for someone to mentor me, and someone that can answer questions of mine. I contacted some reputable breeders but none seemed to like answering my questions. If you know a lot about the breed and would like to help me out that would be great. thank you so much for your time and knowledge :] oh and leave your email so we can talk. thanks again.
[Very General] obviously knows almost nothing about GSDs. A show champion is VERY unlikely to be a genuine breed-worthy GSD. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source/links/Defining_a_GSD_001261993982/ lists the steps a genuine GSD must pass in order to qualify as breed-worthy. In Germany and several other countries, no litter can be registered as GSDs unless both parents have passed at least the first 4 steps. To compete in shows in those nations, a GSD must achieve all those steps by the age of 2 years.
Apart from the "intimated" error, I doubt that he/she knows how a GSD should stand. Everything in http://www.leabashiba.com/fashion.vs.GSD.htm is registered as a GSD, but only a few of them actually qualify for Breed Survey Classification. The ONLY part of the AKC/GSDCA rebel "Standard" worth having is this drawing showing the 3 positions in which a GSD can be evaluated: http://www.gsdca.org/Noframes/standard/Illo22.htm - what a shame that Yank breeders & Yank handlers & Yank judges can't understand drawings, eh!
No-one can mentor you on-line. That role requires you being in a hands-on situation. Both families that mentored us lived about 8 hours away when we started, so we saw them only when visiting my wife's parents. But we later moved to only 2 hours away, and did such as call in on our way home after dinner, talk & play cards all night, help clean their kennels soon after dawn, then drive home to clean our own kennels.
But you can learn MUCH on-line.
Including using the 2 links above.
But first step is remembering that a shepherd is a person - the canine breed always has 3 capital letters in its English name.
Followed by realising that there is only ONE valid Standard of the GSD - and it does NOT appear in the web-site of The KC (UK), the AKC, the CKC, the UKC. It is the one approved by the WUSV (World Union of GSD Clubs, with about 77 member nations) and linked to in the first address, in the FCI web-site.
Next step is to decide whether you wish to produce Agility winners, AlsatiOns, DogSport winners, German Crouchers, guide dogs, herding dogs, NAmerican Ski-Slope Dogs, obedience test winners, Prick-Eared Bassets, S&R dogs, Teeth-on-Feet, Titanic Tail-Tuckers, or typical GSDs. THAT decision steers you to the type of club you should join, and then to finding the top 3 or 5 such breeders in your country.
Regardless of distance, you will buy your foundation brood from one of that 5 (or from an existing protégé recommended by one of them) - either as a fully-Guaranteed puppy, or as a mature bit.ch with just one litter left before she is too old for further breeding. You then need to persuade a couple within travel range to be your mentors.
A hint: If a prospective mentor has more than a handful of fertile pooches, or retains no "oldies", look elsewhere - he/she is a puppy-miller, albeit a high-class one, so has attitudes contrary to the wishes of Max von Stephanitz (founder of our breed), who wanted all GSDs home-raised, not kennelled. You have obviously been approaching such people, and they DON'T want any rival breeders taking away part of what they regard as "their" market.
If you don't already own it, buy a copy of "The German Shepherd Today" by Strickland & Moses. Once you have digested that, buy each of
one of Dr Malcolm Willis's GSD history & genetics books,
"The Dog in Action" by McDowell Lyon,
"The New Knowledge of Dog Behaviour" by Clarence Pfaffenberger.
Those, plus a genetics book, are permanently beside my right elbow when I am at the computer.
Contact my e-group if you want advice as to clubs once you've decided on the purpose you wish to breed for.
• Add http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/The_GSD_Source to your browser's Bookmarks or Favorites so that you can easily look up such as feeding, vaccinations, worming, clubs, weights, teething, neutering, disorders, genetics.
If you join it you can access its Files => Choosing_a_GSD.doc, as well.
• Join some of the 400+ YahooGroups dedicated to various aspects of living with GSDs. Each group's Home page tells you which aspects they like to discuss, and how active they are. Unlike YA, they are set up so that you can have an ongoing discussion with follow-up questions for clarification. Most allow you to include photos. My group and http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/GSD_Genetics should be among them.
