Toronto Humane Society Adoption Q&A

Interested about life in a shelter for a cat?

How is the adoption process set up? Does anyone know what the percentage of a cat being adopted is? How long do most city shelters take care of a cat before they have to put it down? Do shelters receive alot of volunteers?

The Toronto Humane society is asking for volunteers; I can't go to the open house until Sunday, but was hoping someone could give me an idea before then. Thanks!

It depends on the type of shelter. A kill shelter is usually county run and the animals are kept for only 3-7 days before being put down. The animals receive no medical care and adoption fees are minimal. I just paid $30 to spring a guy from one of those a couple of weeks ago. You have to sign a spay/neuter agreement. A no kill shelter is run by an individual or group who frequents kill pounds to rescue all the most adoptable animals (not sick, well socialized) they can. They take in owner surrenders as space and funds allow. These animals will receive vet care, grooming, and sometimes go to foster homes till a home can be found. Adoption fees are more (maybe $75-100) due to the vet care. Most require the animal be fixed before leaving the shelter. These shelters also screen potential adopters by having them fill out applications and going through an interview. Some will do a home visit before approving an adoption. A breed rescue is dedicated to a specific breed of animal. These animals are kept in foster homes till a home is found. Since most of the animals are purebreds adoption fees are higher. Potential adopters will go through a very in depth screening process and are required to have the pet fixed prior to leaving for it's new home. Volunteers are sometimes in short supply at any shelter. There is always room for more. Foster homes are the most needed commodity. Good luck on volunteering and thanks for caring.
