Toronto Humane Society Q&A
adopting a cat at the toronto humane society?
dose anyone know how much You have to pay to adopt a cat or kitten at the toronto humane society??
Geesh... I guess the other answerer ought to be a bit more forgiving so she can overcome her bitterness.
But she said they don't require a fee, but a donation. I cannot understand why this is a BAD thing! Maybe she feels that it means that people would not adopt animals and that the "overage" would be sent to medical research by the Humane Society? I can't see THAT happening! If she means that adopters would adopt the animals for research, then isn't that really the fault of the Humane Society for NOT following up on the adopters... that this does not happen?
I think it's a GOOD thing to have a "donation" structure. I only wish they had the same thing for turning over animals to the shelter, too. I know of a lady locally who began her own rescue "mission" for cats. She worked as a vet's assistant, and came across many stories of people who could not care for their cat(s), DUMPED their cat(s) ... yes it DOES happen!... or simply KILLING them because they couldn't AFFORD the "drop off" fees the shelter charged. This one man had 4 kittens he could not keep. He could not find homes for them, nor could he afford to keep them. The local shelter charges a $70 "drop off" fee, and that would mean a bill of $280 to turn them to the shelter!!! HE couldn't afford that! He heard of this lady's "rescue" and contacted her, telling her that if she didn't take them that he would have no choice but to kill them ... and I quote... "with a pop in the back of the head with my .22 while they were eating" !!!! Talk about CRUEL!!! Needless to say, the lady IMMEDIATELY made arrangements to adopt the 4 kittens.
My suggestion to you would be to give as MUCH of a donation as you can afford. If you feel that is still insufficient, then hold a BAKE SALE at your church to raise money ... or a yard sale in your neighborhood... or something... and donate the proceeds ALL to the shelter. ALL gifts are ALWAYS much welcomed.... and you can always give with "instructions" that the monies raised be used to cover spaying/neutering, or adoption costs, or whatever.
Oh... here's another suggestion for fund raising... some companies have a "quid pro quo" type fund raising... one in particular is PIZZA HUT. What they will do is you arrange with them to have a promotional fund raising... they offer a special pizza deal...for a day... if people ASK for that deal on that day, then they will donate, say $5/pizza ordered, to your cause. I did this with the local shelter. It was something new for everyone involved... it didn't raise a lot, but then, we're in a very SMALL Wyoming town.. but raised $180 for the shelter. In a LARGE CITY like TORONTO.. can you just IMAGINE how much money you could raise? GIVE THEM A CALL and ASK!!! What does it cost YOU? NOTHING! Want to advertize the fundraiser? Contact the newspapers/radio and ask for them to DONATE their advertising fees! They'll do it! So?
RAISE MONEY for the shelter... bake sales... aluminum can collecting... pizza hut... yard/garage sale... GOOD LUCK! And LOVE that cat you will adopt! He/she needs it as much as you do.
Me... kittyslave23... I know my place.
