Saint Bernard training?
My friend got a Saint Bernard as a puppy and I don't think that he was prepared for how big the dog was going to get or how much time the dog needed. He was going to take the dog to the pound because he couldn't take care of it and chances are because of the dog's size, he would have been killed and not adopted out, so my husband and I said we would take him instead. We have had him since yesterday adn he is a great dog but he tends to want to go after other dogs when he take him out, I have called about obedience classes for him and every place I have called, has said that he is to old (2 years) and set in his ways to be trained now, so my husband and I are pretty much on our own to train him. Does any one have any advice on how I can break him of this? He does know basic commands like sit and lay down but no others, we really need to teach him to heel and to walk beside us when he is on the leash.
I'm shocked that your local trainers are unwilling to train an adult dog. I personally think that's a crock.
See if you can find an animal behaviorist. If you have trouble finding one, join a St. Bernard group here at Yahoo and ask for help in finding one in your area. How he behaves may be a result of how your friend worked with him or treated him.
Google search for training, dog aggressive dog and check the sites of the trainers on Animal Planet and NGC like Caesar (The Dog Whisperer) and Victoria. You might be able to get one of them to offer services free to put your dog on their show. You lose nothing by asking. -!-
