Training Australian Cattle Dog Puppies Q&A
How much exercise is safe for my puppy?
I have a high drive australian cattle dog puppy, and he loves exercise. I've heard it's bad to give them too much exercise, but what is too much? He usually goes to the dog park for 1 to 2 hours a day, then goes on either a 30 minute hike, or an hour walk on level ground. He then has 2 10 minute training walks, and 10 minute potty walks as needed. In addition, he loves fetch and tag, and plays with the cat nonstop.
I've tried not exercising him so much, but then he gets grumpy and whiny. Thoughts? Advice?
honestly i don't really think the 'don't exercise your puppy too much' rule really applies to herding dogs. it always seems like it's never too much. the only thing to watch out for really strenuous exercise sessions is if the puppy is under 6 mo. because then it may cause some trouble with the joints. as long as you're making sure your dog gets plenty of water and is not being overheated and is enjoying it then i think you'll both be fine.

Training Australian Cattle Dog Puppies Q&A
What are some things you can do with my puppy?
my puppy at 6 months in the 17. He's very boring to walk though it takes 6 different tours around my city. I'm also bored walking are important, but what else I can do. i already play ball and take him to dog parks. So are some interesting things that can teach what is already knows sit, stay, down, leave it, and taught him calm, because my niece and nephew to be so small. And what other things i formation was can teach and also some new interesting exercises i can do with it. I like to run, but I know he is not old enough yet, because it can have problems in your joints and such. It is a lab mix Australian cattle dog.
There are a lot of fun out there hiding with food. Stuff Kongs with cheese, dog biscuits, some cakes, and meat shredded once to keep busy. Put your meals in the feed buckets (available at line) or a plastic water bottle. Teach him to sniff a treatment that hide in a room. Be sure to wear something very "stinky" so you can find easily - cattle dogs are not particularly hot it smells. Place a toy on a string, attached to a pole you can swing around. Cattle Dogs love to chase things. Have training sessions trick, but very briefly. Try some fun things like roll over, give me a hug, standing shake, labels (he puts a paw on what you choose, very funny) and maybe keep food in your nose until instructed to eat it. he likes the water? If so, play local water lake with floating toys (but be sure to put a very light line in the case of not bringing it back!). Agility is great for cattle dogs, they are very smart and energetic. At this age, you should not jump over a foot high, and absolutely NOT to do weave poles. Everything else will be fine. He can jump higher when one year old and can weave poles in about a year and a half. He is too young to run? What? My dog was running since I was four months old and never had a problem. Maybe I should work up and running, starting with short sprints. I mean, it go find and play the dog walking, right? That's racing! Bring plenty of water and a dog bowl when run, and pause for a rest when he gets back behind or trousers too. Hope this helps! Good luck!
