UKC Purple Ribbon distinction?
The UKC says, "Purple Ribbon" is a distinction UKC gives to a dog if all 14 ancestors within a dog's three generation pedigree (parents, grand parents, great grandparents) are each registered with United Kennel Club."
I have three questions please. What is a generation of dogs? Who are the 14 ancestors? How do you know papers are authentic?
I am not too stuck on papers, but since the owner is justifying the cost of the dog based on its pedigree, I am doing some homework first.

A generation is a branch on the dogs family tree:
1st Generation - parents - 2
2nd Generation - grandparents - 4
3rd Generation - great grandparents - 6
For a total of 14 registered with the UKC - registration is no guarantee of quality. The pedigree will tell you the ancestors and if you have doubts about whether the breeder is selling a dog with papers that aren't authentic you should go elsewhere.
I base my prices on what the median price for pups of similar pedigree is nationally. At present that is $1800. Pups come with a contract, health guarantee etc... None of mine are UKC registered at the moment as I do not like the fact that UKC will allow dogs on limited AKC registrations to be bred and registered w/ UKC. My dogs are all AKC registered.
Personally, I wouldn't buy a UKC registered dog from a breed that is AKC registrable unless it were dual-registered.
If you have issues with the cost - buy elsewhere. You pay for what you get if you want a quality dog.
