Virginia Dog Breeders Q&A

Spaniels and Setters?

I've heard that Setters and Spaniels are very similar; ok lets face it, I've heard they're the same but differnt sizes, and I've recently started doing research into English Setters but I have a few questions: I've known cockers spaniels to be a bit "nippy" has anyone here known ES to behave like this as well?
I can't seem to find a straight answer about their energy levels; some sites say they are hunting dogs and as such have limitless energy and should only go to extremely active owners, others say they are energetic outdoors and inactive indoors: which is true?
Do they need a large yard or could they do without one if they were exercised on leash or in parks?
My last question about Welsh Springers is: how can pet quality dogs be located? I've browsed for some rescues/ breeders in the DC/Virginia area, but all I can find are hunting lines, which tend to be more energetic (so I've read).

I'm all ears for any other info. Thanks for taking the time to read my question. :)

Setters and Spaniels are hunting dogs and so were bred for their speed, stamina, brains, and ability to work well with people. Any sporting dog is probably going to be happier and healthier when living with a family that can both physically and mentally stimulate it on a regular basis. Some dogs in the sporting group tend to be active indoors while docile indoors, but all in the group need to have regular exercise. It keeps them fit in mind and body and curbs any destructive behavior that may come about from boredom. Cockers, especially show lines, can be nippy, but I believe that's from bad breeding and bad owners. I've personally never known an English Setter, but I do know that by nature they're one of the most gentle and placid of the sporting group. Of course, good obedience training and an owner who provides ways to vent off energy outside are also great ways to have a quiet and relaxed pet indoors.

I have experience with Irish Setters and currently own a Field Spaniel. Both breeds need more than exercise on a leash or in a park. I take my Field Spaniel out for a 5-6 mile run every day through fields and he's still up for more. The Irish Setters have a very large yard where they run around all day and they still need to be taken out for at least an hour.

If you're looking into Welsh Springers it's probably best if you can provide a large yard and enough time outside to let off some steam. If you're not interested in getting a field line Welsh Springer, perhaps you can look into another breed of dog in the sporting group that isn't as energetic.
