West Highland White Terrier Grooming Q&A

Tips on keeping a Westie well-groomed?

I am getting a West Highland White Terrier today. I have been reading about the breed for awhile, and I know that she will have to be hand stripped 3-4 times a year. Other than that, how do I keep her groomed. Can she be clipped or trimmed?
I am going to pay someone else to hand strip her.

Talk with your breeder. This is a beautiful dog, but very difficult to keep snowy-white. If your dog is show-quality and there is even a remote chance that this dog will see a show ring, it is imperative that she is hand stripped. Clippering the coat will ruin it. If you are getting a puppy, you will want to do a little stripping every day or so. Keep sessions short and happy. You are just getting the dog accustomed to the stripping. I believe the head is typically scissored to get the prized "chrysanthemum" look. Never allow a pair of clippers to touch a show-coat.

Pet-quality is your choice. I have a pet Scottie--she is clippered. Clippering breaks the coat and softens it.

Ask the breeder what products are recommended to keep the coat white. Ask how to address staining in the coat (eyes, feet, muzzle). Also, I'm sure you understand that Westies are notorious for skin problems. Find out what food, supplements and flea preventatives your breeder recommends. Using the correct products will help keep the coat in tip-top shape. Also, ask for recommendations on what shampoos to use to bathe (you can get whitening shampoos) and how often to bathe. The tendency is to want to bathe white-coated dogs very frequently, but this can be very detrimental to the coat and skin. Good brushing and wiping paws is preferred to bathing for wirey terrier coats. Westies love to dig in the dirt, so that doesn't mesh well with the snowy coat.

Good luck with your new pooch. These are special little dogs!

West Highland White Terrier Grooming Q&A

West Highland White Terrier grooming?

Hey, does anyone know where I can find information on how to prepare a West Highland white terrier competition rules.

As a bully, this is the book that I am on the breed standards: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Dog-Grooming-Eileen-Geeson/dp/1552978737 However, the Westie is very thick hair and cut is not exactly easy. I recommend a professional in a groom shop for you.
