Whats the big deal with a white german shepherd?

i know a white german shepherd is a fault...but that dosent mean its not a good pet! So why is there so much controversy over a white german shepherd being bred to the fullest??? And can i breed my german shepherd female with her brother? A dog is a dog right??

You succeeded in getting ignoramuses to again betray their ignorance.

An attempt to educate some of them:
(1) There is NO "white gene". Nor a single gene for white. White is the effect of TWO PAIRS of recessives. One pair (^ e^) blocks production of eumelanin (=black). Which other pair blocks phaeomelanin (tan) depends on the breed.
(2) No diseases or physical defects are CAUSED by alleles that produce white. BUT plenty of problems are perpetuated by ignorant breeders who put white-to-white just because both ARE white. People who deliberately produce anything listed in their breed's Standard as a DQ or Fault _IS_ ignorant, regardless of whatever else they know.

Perfectly true.
Which is why my chat-group has Rule 1, anything regd as a GSD or looks & behaves like a GSD is to be accepted as a GSD.
BUT our Rule 2 is that ONLY those GSDs closely fitting FCI#166 ( http://www.fci.be/uploaded_files/166A1991_en.doc ) are to be bred from.
So NO deliberate pet-to-pet or fault-to-fault matings.

Pets provide companionship, a reason for depressed people to continue living, and fur-therapy. But ANY well-treated dog can do THAT.

Whereas only a Basset can be a Basset, only a Rottweiler can be a Rotty, and only a German Shepherd can be a GSD (although a Malinois can come close - understandable, seeing as they were developed in neighbouring areas to perform the same tasks in the same way on much the same terrain).

To remind people of the purpose of each breed, and of the mental & physical characteristics needed to fulfil those purposes, each genuine breed has a written Standard.

Although the arrogant KCs of Britain, Canada, NZ, the USofA have each invented their own rebel "Standards" (as if there can be 6 or more DIFFERENT blueprints for the same house, or the same car, or the same breed!), for the GSD there is only one valid & authoritative Standard, the one linked to above.
(1) It started as the Country of Origin Standard drawn up in 1899 and modified periodically as the breed built up numbers & quality so no longer needed various undesirable features.
(2) After Notice of Motion was sent to all 77 member nations of the WUSV (World Union of GSD Clubs) that Standard was modified by agreement at the 1991 conference. So it is truly an International Standard.

■ White is listed as a fault.
So non-ignorant people need to work out WHY it is a fault. (Determinedly-ignorant people merely claim to know better than do all the experts elected to help create/improve the Standard.)

Those with the skills to read lots of Breed Standards from the Herding/Pastoral/Sheep-&-Cattle Group, and the intelligence to work things out, will have realised that:
(a) the woolly yellow-white dogs used by shepherds are all GUARD dogs, disguised as sheep so that they can get closer to 2-legged & 4-legged predators before being recognised as a DOG. Some of them are even deliberately bred to have a "faulty" gait so that they bobble-along in much the same way sheep do, rather than glide the way wolves & coyotes do.
(b) professional shepherds don't like white dogs for herding.

One reason for (b) is obvious - a shepherd fencing or thistling or riding some distance from the flock wants to be able to see where the dog is & what it's doing, so needs a dog that's black on top to contrast with the sheep and the dust they kick up when being mustered.

A widely-believed reason is that sheep allegedly don't respect a white dog the way they do a dark dog, which means that they're harder to convince to move, and to stay away from the crops the GSD is protecting. So the dog probably has to do some biting to move them; and certainly each sheep that slips past into the crop requires the dog to bite-&-haul to place that sheep back on the grazing side of the patrol line, with 3 consequences:
• The dog expends more energy & so needs more food,
• the sheep's hide is marked, decreasing its value after slaughter,
• the shepherd must pay compensation to the owner of that crop.
Sometimes there is a fourth consequence - the dog breaks a tooth, or suffers a broken bone when that sheep times its kick well.

In addition:
- part of the effect of a security or police dog is its "look" (we regard dark as fiercer than pale) & ability to glide up unseen in poor light.
- a white guide dog adds to the visibility of the dog-&-handler, but a blind person could never be sure that a white dog looks clean.

■ Incest breeding:
Again the ignoramuses don't know how VALUABLE a tool it is. Little cancer research could have been done without the Jaxxon mice, produced for decades by ONLY brother-sister and parent-child matings so that any Jaxxon mouse was effectively genetically identical to every other Jaxxon mouse.

Inbreeding of itself does not produce any problems other than eventual fertility depression and a weakening of the immune system (the latter being essential for the Jaxxon mice).
But it sure does increase the odds that some of the offspring will inherit TWO copies of some of the common ancestor's alleles. (Genetics tuition: Apart from genes on only the X chromosome, all mammals have 2 copies of everything, just as a bicycle has 2 tyres. The 2 copies may be identical, they may be different. Most genes have only 2 versions, a dominant and a recessive, but others have many versions. Each version is an allele of that gene.). If the allele inherited as a pair is for a BENEFICIAL trait, that is great! If it's a recessive for something damaging, such as PRA or HD, that's a disaster - EXCEPT that this proves that both parents were carrying that recessive.

People most likely to improve their kennel by careful inbreeding are the intelligents who've known the families of most pooches in the pedigree. People most likely to get disasters from inbreeding know almost NOTHING in the pedigree, just hope that collecting a famous name lots of times will miraculously bring together ONLY its good alleles, despite that neither stud nor brood resembles that ancestor in any way, and doesn't even have good health....

The White Shepherd Dog is recognized and registered as a German Shepherd dog under the American Kennel Club (AKC), the Canadian Kennel Club (CCC) and the Kennel Club [UK] (KC), although white is a disqualification are not eligible to be shown in the conformation ring. Because of this and because many dog breeders do not breed German Shepherd a white dog, White Shepherd clubs in North America have been the objective of the separation of races, hoping to achieve proper recognition that these dogs deserve. Through a careful study of race in the world, has determined that there is a sufficient gene pool to maintain a breed apart. The standards developed by the race of white shepherd dog are very similar to that of raising standards for German Shepherd, except, of course, color. According to the Standard UKC breed, coat color is pure white ideal. However, the colors ranging from very light cream to light as cookies are acceptable. Skin color should be light pink to gray, gray preferred. The nose, lips, eyelids, and pads should be fully pigmented black.
